Key findings
- 22% of catalogued exercises (188 of 873) require no equipment at all.
- 51% (449) cannot be performed without gym equipment — barbells, cables or machines.
- Legs has 37× more catalogued exercises than Neck (298 vs 8).
- Only 7% of exercises are rated expert — the catalogue skews heavily toward beginners (60%).
- The average exercise has 5.9 equipment alternatives that train the same primary muscle.
- Barbell is the single most represented equipment type (170 exercises), ahead of bodyweight (188) and dumbbell (123).
Coverage by muscle group
Exercise catalogues are not evenly distributed. Legs and Arms together account for 51% of all catalogued movements, while Neck accounts for 1%.
Coverage by equipment
Barbell-based movements dominate the catalogue, which is a meaningful barrier: they are the least accessible equipment type for people training at home.

Method
The base catalogue derives from the public-domain wrkout/exercises.json dataset. We normalise equipment labels (the source leaves equipment null for bodyweight movements, which we reclassify), repair mis-encoded characters, and compute the derived fields — equipment alternatives, difficulty progressions and antagonist pairings — using the muscle-overlap and antagonist-mapping rules described on our methodology page. Counts here are of primary muscle only; an exercise with two primary muscles is counted once under each.
Figures regenerate on every site build, so the numbers on this page always match the downloadable CSV.
